Dr. Randy J. Greenberg in
Wallingford is one of the few dentists in Connecticut to offer the FDA cleared Laser
Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP®), which is utilized for patients who
have
moderate to severe levels of gum disease. This convenient laser
periodontal therapy allows for the removal of diseased tissue and bacteria with
minimal pain and recovery time, and without damaging teeth or harming healthy
tissue in the process.
What is Gum Disease?
Our mouths are full of
bacteria, mucus, and other particles. These three substances combine to create
plaque. Plaque that has not been removed becomes tartar, which must be
professionally removed during regular dental visits at least twice per year. Bacteria
that cause gum disease live in these deposits and produce toxins which in turn
cause our bodies to destroy the structures that support our teeth. If enough
bone is lost over time, the teeth can become loose and may be lost.
Symptoms of Gum Disease
Gum disease, also known as
periodontal disease, can be identified by symptoms like bad breath, bleeding
gums, receding gums, and loose teeth. These symptoms should
be analyzed immediately, as the location of the disease allows it direct access
to the bloodstream and has been associated with serious health issues such as
heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and premature birth. In many cases, gum disease
is virtually painless and asymptomatic, becoming very dangerous for those who
do not receive regular dental exams.
A Short Overview of Laser
Periodontal Therapy
• Before
the procedure, patients are evaluated to determine the severity of their gum
disease.
• The
procedure is performed with the PerioLase® MVP-7™, which is a target specific laser that
essentially vaporizes diseased tissue and bacteria.
• Blood
clots are then created around the treated areas and the gum tissues are
compressed against the surfaces of the teeth so that sutures are not required.
• The
bite, or the way in which the teeth fit together, is evaluated and adjusted as
necessary.
